Magnolia Science Academy progress

Couple of weeks ago, our principal in Magnolia Science Academy sent us an e-mail with a link to Washington Post’s website at the end. He said in his e-mail that Magnolia Science Academy had increased its ranking in Washington Post’s America’s Most Challenging High Schools national ranking as follows; 285, 115, 117 and 48 in the years of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively. This is growth and I consider growth as the key element to show progress in anything. Magnolia Science Academy excels, as you may easily see from her rankings, in challenging her students and this also brings growth to student success pretty much in every field. Magnolia Science Academy teachers enlighten our kids making them believe once they push themselves to the limit, they’ll see that there is nothing in this life they cannot achieve. Tomorrow will be in good hands with these kids just being there for our future.

Thanks Magnolia Science Academy for being with our children on the roads of accomplishment; we are grateful for you showing them that there is no limit in getting better in life.

MSA’s unique programs | Busting Gulen charter schools myths

Parent Testimonial:

Recently, when surfing on the Web, I came across with some Gulen charter schools comments. I also found Parents4Magnolia website, and I thank Magnolia Science Academy parents, who’re supporting  their schools by sharing their experiences. I want to share my own thoughts about our school:

MSA's unique programsAll the staff at MSA are kind, caring and loving. They know all the students by name and beyond and they listen to what anyone has to say. They are open-minded and fair and exhibit a true love for the children, the school and their job. They have never made me feel bad as a parent if I am unsure as to what to do regarding a situation, they offer kind, constructive help and they believe in what they do.

I really enjoy the unique programs that are offered at MSA. What my child learns in Getting Ready For Life class is such a wonderful idea, I wish I had that when I was in school. Also the fact that most/all of his graded tests that he brings home are fill in the answer and not multiple choice which I think is great and really teaches the children to study and solve the problems rather than answer is a, b,c…. The elective classes have been lots of fun for my child and they learn so much in such a short time. He states that he likes all his classes and all of his teachers are wonderful.

I know many kids don’t like to go to school at all after 4th or 5th grade. Somehow our education system starts breaking at about those grades. Magnolia magically keeps students motivated to learn and enjoy at school.

Thank you, MSA!

My Child’s Future is in Magnolia Science Academy! | Busting Gulen charter schools myths

Parent Testimonial:

My Child’s Future is in Magnolia Science Academy!A parent devoted to his children’s education, I cannot say enough how dissatisfied I was with the traditional public schools.

MSA administrators, teachers, and leaders are ready to be flexible. They can quickly adapt instruction, resources, and many other things to address students’ learning styles. They are attentive to parent requests. They are willing to listen to parents’ concerns. Helloooo! I get phone calls from the teachers about my child’s homework. Phone calls from the teachers in his previous school? only when there is an emergency. In Magnolia Science Academy, not doing your homework is almost treated like an emergency.

The other day, my son’s teacher called me and asked when they can visit our home. How about that? The teacher taking the time to visit us at home to talk about my child. What else can Magnolia do to offer the best education to children? What else would you expect?

MSA offers a future for my child, working together hand in hand with parents, teachers, and administrators unlike any other school system that I know. Spend your time on something good instead of wasting it with ungrounded Gulen charter schools allegations that the parents disagree.

Challenging Programs at MSA | Busting Gulen charter schools myths

Parent Testimonial:

Challenging Programs at MSAWe moved to San Diego last year. Moving within itself is a pretty huge hassle. It gets more complicated when you are moving the kids’ school as well. You need to find a good school for your kids.

We have done a thorough review of the schools in our neighborhood and its surrounding schools. We found out MSA San Diego. We really liked what it was offering. So, we did a school visit and we were attracted to the welcoming environment of the school. The decisive point for us was when we learnt about the challenging programs offered, which help kids surpass their peers.

My son was often bored in his math and science classes in the past couple of years. I was trying to motivate him towards science and math, but you cannot do it by yourself at home; students need to be social as well.

We have seen that at MSA, it is ok to be smart. Kids can go as deep as they can with programs like A-Star. My son is challenged each week. Sometimes, the homework he brings home becomes a family puzzle time. The teachers are not just lecturing the standards or curriculum. They are further teaching kids how to solve the problems; the kids learn from one another and their teachers. I think they have a very good program.

I also like the safety procedures at school; the teachers and administrators have great communication with parents. I am updated by the automated school information system periodically. So, I have a pretty good sense of what is going on my son’s life at school.

I wish MSA San Diego had a high school as well. We started to think about high school now as my son will go to 8th grade next year.

Hope

I am a single parent and I find myself dealing with the challenges of this predicament daily. Magnolia plays a crucial role in our lives and gives me much-needed hope for the future of my children.

Generally, nobody goes out of their way to do anything in our times, unless there is some sort of benefit to them. But the self-sacrificing staff at Magnolia puts forward relentless effort to change the future for the better.

Teacher support

Teacher support

Not everything is great about this school but it provides my child with what she needs for the rest of her life, which is more important than anything else.

Magnolia’s teachers are like another set of parents to my daughter in terms of taking care of her needs and being there to help her whenever she needs. They are devoted to the well-being and future of their students, and believe me those are something you cannot find everywhere.

I know charter schools are not well resourced but they don’t waste either. They try to be efficient in everything and I’m ready to help achieve their goal by all means I have.

Way to go Magnolia team. I salute and support you in your great adventure of education.

Surprisingly enough to me, not all of the Magnolia parents know about this blog. Recently, a parent who has recently heard about it, told me that she wants to share her thoughts about our school. Below is her message..

Thank you Magnolia!

There was a construction going on for a long time in our neighborhood in Bell. We always wondered what that big building is for.

I first came to know Magnolia two years ago; it was a very rainy day.. Magnolia and couple of other charters came to our school where my daughter was attending. Each charter school gave their presentations with enthusiasm. Apparently, they were competing for that large building to start their schools in a brand new campus. The winning charter school would need to have a great academic success track and gain majority of the votes of local parents as well.

Other charter schools were also great, but of all the presentations, I liked Magnolia’s. They invited many students and parents as well; it was much convincing to hear about the school from them. Everybody in the hall were asking questions about Magnolia and their academic programs, discipline etc..

That summer we heard that Magnolia won the competition, that they named the school Magnolia Science Academy-Bell, and they started enrolling students etc. We applied for the school and waited hoping that our little one will be accepted. We were informed there was a long waiting list.

Finally, our daughter was enrolled! We were happy to hear the news. I attended the school’s opening day. It was inspiring to see its modern classrooms and brand new computer and science labs. Everything was brand new, lockers, classroom equipment, desks, tables…

After two years, we’re more than happy with Magnolia. Our daughter is getting a very good education at Magnolia Science Academy-Bell. We’re happy with her grades and her eagerness to learn more, and of course for her excitement/motivation to go to school each morning.

Thank you for coming to our area, Magnolia!

Neighborhood charter school

Neighborhood charter school

Recently, we received an invitation for a Magnolia Open House. I wanted to learn more about the charter school in our neighborhood and decided to attend.

The principal presented the charter school. I especially liked the parent collaboration program called ‘Home visits‘; that sounded original. The school had an automated information system which provided parents with their child’s behavior, grading etc. The school’s API index was really impressive; it was higher than the competing schools around, improving over time since the inception of the school.

I decided to enroll my daughter at Magnolia Science Academy for the upcoming school year and filled the online application.

Back home, searching for Magnolia Science Academy, I happened to read a few blogs titled Gulen charter schools, authored by “Investigative bloggers” or “very concerned (?) citizens.” Your blog offers clear and concise responses to their claims.

As a prospective parent, I’m very excited about her new school and don’t want such bogus sites to affect other uninformed parents.

Magnolia is the best! | Busting Gulen charter schools myths

Parent Testimonial:

Thumbs up - good job

Thumbs up, Magnolia!

Magnolia is the best school that my daughter attended. She really wanted to enroll to Magnolia. She gets extended math instruction with after schools and clubs. We had problems with math at traditional public school. She never got an A in math at her previous school and she did not like the math. Now, she seems to like math, thanks to these after school activities.

Magnolia is providing a state-of-art education involving the school community more than any other school. Magnolia stands out with its diverse and culturally vibrant school environment. They build a community around the school to serve students and parents with true commitment to student learning. Educational achievement, the greatest goal for the kids, cannot be attained without maximum effort.

Magnolia is a true gem in rather gloomy educational landscape after recent recession. Recent cutbacks in California education budget seem to be replaced with even more hard work at Magnolia schools by their highly motivated staff. Magnolia’s educational quality is on an upward trend despite all the cuts. Magnolia is very attentive to parent feedback and they quickly change things around based on parent recommendations adaptively.

There are some allegations against Magnolia (namely being Gulen charter schools). These allegations seriously contradict with what we have seen at these schools by far. All we see at Magnolia is dedication and support for kids to attain their life-long goals.

No Less Than Awesome!!! | Busting Gulen charter schools myths

Parent Testimonial:

Big question

Puzzled parent

Hello!

My eldest is a junior at Magnolia Science Academy. For the past three years she has been at MSA, we have experienced no less than awesome. My Julie adores her school!!! My husband and I have long searched for a college-prep school and MSA has proved to be the right one from the get-go. With the strong curriculum, extra teacher support and an amazing after-school program, students are challenged and encouraged to do their best. The college-going culture at MSA certainly has its effect on Julie. School hasn’t started yet, but we find ourselves making plans for MSA’s winter SAT camp. Julie will try two AP classes this year—a challenge she decided to take on this year.

This blog has taken me by surprise. I wasn’t aware of it until an MSA parent mentioned about it at the school parent group meeting. I kept nodding my head as I read comments of other satisfied parents on this blog. But holy moly! What’s the deal about Fetullah Gulen? What does Magnolia Science Academy have to do with him? I am just stunned by the weird Gulen charter schools allegations. What an uncanny story!!! I felt like I am watching the blockbuster Conspiracy Theory.

I have been actively involved in this charter school for three years. I have seen no implication of any of those allegations. I will be sure to talk with other involved parents to get their opinions, but whoever is writing those allegations need to leave their computer chairs, visit the school and see it for themselves.  And hey, if they can manage to find any truth to their allegations, they need to show it to us, too.

Overall, I can make one comment about Magnolia Science Academy: It is no less than awesome!!!
