Couple of weeks ago, our principal in Magnolia Science Academy sent us an e-mail with a link to Washington Post’s website at the end. He said in his e-mail that Magnolia Science Academy had increased its ranking in Washington Post’s America’s Most Challenging High Schools national ranking as follows; 285, 115, 117 and 48 in the years of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively. This is growth and I consider growth as the key element to show progress in anything. Magnolia Science Academy excels, as you may easily see from her rankings, in challenging her students and this also brings growth to student success pretty much in every field. Magnolia Science Academy teachers enlighten our kids making them believe once they push themselves to the limit, they’ll see that there is nothing in this life they cannot achieve. Tomorrow will be in good hands with these kids just being there for our future.
Thanks Magnolia Science Academy for being with our children on the roads of accomplishment; we are grateful for you showing them that there is no limit in getting better in life.

At first, my son was quite hesitant about attending Magnolia Science Academy when I had told him that he was not going to continue 6th grade at his old school. He was sad at first and asked “why?”. “You will be challenged”, I replied. I told him that I would be able to see actual grades instead of number scale grades, and I would be able to monitor his progress, missing assignments and behavior. Moreover, I’ve heard good stories from other parents as to how well their children did in all sense academically and as an individual.
Some of the positive experiences that I have observed as a parent in this school is that, the administration is very engaged in the progress of students. I am amazed that they are very friendly and that they know every student and most of the parents by name. That is something that I have never encountered with any school before. It’s nice to feel welcomed in my son’s school. I really like that they have the extra tutoring which helps all students improve and gives them the motivation to do better. Also the Coolsis is a great tool for parents to be on top of their kids’ progress.
For that, I thank all MSA staff members.

Parent Testimonial:
We were all honored when our son selected for the Lego Robotics club as well as the invitations to the Math club. Study Table has been good for him too as he gets focused time to work on the homework that challenges him the most. He has really come out of his shell and gaining confidence in his scholastic abilities.
Our son was absent from school for about a week, due to an illness. While he was out, the staff and every teacher was very helpful by providing with the necessary materials for our kid to study. Once he returned, everyone helped him and all the teachers went out of their way to get our child back on track.
I’m thankful for the dedicated Magnolia Science Academy staff..

It’s sad how a few people out there are trying to defame Magnolia Science Academy with lies and invented “Gulen charter schools” term. In order to support our school, I want to share my thoughts about MSA, where my son attends:
Without a doubt, the most positive experience my child and my family in general has been the one-on-one support my son has received at Magnolia Science Academy and the amazing communication between teachers and us.
The entire team; teachers, administrators, counselors, and resources services have spent a significant deal of time and effort to support my son’s learning. I was very pleased to know that he recently made the honor roll. This is the same child that was diagnosed with some form of learning disability (was told by many before MSA), who would always do only “ok” at his best. Thanks to the academic and personal involvement by MSA staff, he is exceeding everyone’s expectations and continuing to grow.
I think believing in the student, caring the student, and working as a team (parents, teachers and administrators) is one thing that I think all public schools should adopt. Magnolia Science Academy is beating the odds year after year. When MSA sends some of the news regarding their achievements like their great rankings in California and Nationwide, it is no surprise to me.
I am glad, some of my friends had suggested MSA to us. After one educational year, I am delighted to observe how MSA improved my son’s progress.

The amount of attention given to my child here is beyond comparison. It really shows when you’re dealing with people who do what they do because they love it. If I had to sum up the MSA teachers in one word it would be “transforming”. My son was never into school until we enrolled him at Magnolia, and now he is one of the top students in his class. A parent devoted to his children’s education, I cannot say enough how dissatisfied I was with the traditional public schools.
MSA administrators, teachers, and leaders are ready to be flexible. They can quickly adapt instruction, resources, and many other things to address students’ learning styles. They are attentive to parent requests. They are willing to listen to parents’ concerns. Helloooo! I get phone calls from the teachers about my child’s homework. Phone calls from the teachers in his previous school? only when there is an emergency. In Magnolia Science Academy, not doing your homework is almost treated like an emergency.
The other day, my son’s teacher called me and asked when they can visit our home. How about that? The teacher taking the time to visit us at home to talk about my child. What else can Magnolia do to offer the best education to children? What else would you expect?
MSA offers a future for my child, working together hand in hand with parents, teachers, and administrators unlike any other school system that I know. Spend your time on something good instead of wasting it with ungrounded Gulen charter schools allegations that the parents disagree.

My son enrolled Magnolia Science Academy last year. We moved in from another state and we were a little worried whether our son could adapt to his new environment and his new school. Before coming to Southern California, we did our research on schools just like any other concerned parent would do. We decided where we will move. We looked for a great school on California Department of Education websites to learn more about schools’ academic successes and wanted to learn about the school’s social and cultural options. We found out that MSA was one of the most successful schools within our neighborhood. It was offering free HIGH quality after-school programs and clubs.
We also found out some websites claiming MSA to be part of a network. We came from a state and a town where there wasn’t much diversity. So, I understand clearly how some of these folks could be paranoid, suspicious and mongering hatred towards any foreign national. I tried to understand what these folks claim and wanted to further investigate while I try to find out the best school for my son. We visited MSA and met with the school principal and the assistant principal. We were glad that there was an opening in my son’s grade. We learned the school’s philosophy, approach to learning, and its programs. I also asked about couple of Gulen charter schools allegations I learned from the website. The principal wasn’t surprised that much. He explained that their staff is diverse and they serve a very diverse student body.
My son’s educational experience at MSA has been phenomenal so far. He adapted to his school, teachers, and friends. The classes are small so all of his teachers know him pretty well. We get periodic updates about his grades and behaviors from school’s information system. Whenever I find time, I visit the school and volunteer. I may say that, I observed my son’s school pretty well this year. I am glad that we did the right decision by selecting MSA for our son. I believe MSA will grow academically as they often did in the past.

Success ahead
My son has been at Magnolia Science Academy for four years and I feel it has been the best for him. Smaller environment which has given him more confidence. He had a year that he did not do well at all because of a couple of teachers. This year he has had great teachers and it shows in his grades. He has all “A”s, but a single “B” which is something that he has never had before. There is actually a good competition between him and his sister that attends another public high school as a senior. This last semester his grades were better than hers and he was so proud of himself.
The teachers know their students on a first name basis. He is somebody at Magnolia. They know how they are doing in the classes too. I was amazed that a teacher that doesn’t teach my student came around and was discussing what they needed to do next. The personal attention is second to none from what I have seen and experienced in public schools. I feel that they progress with their work and are accelerating their knowledge.
Each individual teacher makes more effort to be acquainted with some of the unique needs of many of the students at Magnolia. I feel the teachers are very flexible as to classroom behavior. Rather than teaching via traditional methods in one particular way, they accommodate how learning is done for tailored for each individual student. For example, they differentiate between different learning styles allowing hand fidgeting items in a classroom for students who listen better. They have the students take a stretch break so they attend better half-way through a class. They allow them to peer-tutor each other during reading hours. They do not just lecture but engage hands-on activities in clubs. They offer intervention opportunities for kids who struggle with dexterity in writing a lot of information. They set these kids up environmentally for optimal learning, thus, they learn better. The school always make adaptive changes to the learning styles of all children. That is how this charter school improves consistently. These adaptive changes create a true learning environment. The teachers are truly concerned about students being educated.
MSA considers how students learn and succeed to ensure life-long achievements beyond the school time. I think Magnolia Science Academy is there for our children.

Neighborhood charter school
Recently, we received an invitation for a Magnolia Open House. I wanted to learn more about the charter school in our neighborhood and decided to attend.
The principal presented the charter school. I especially liked the parent collaboration program called ‘Home visits‘; that sounded original. The school had an automated information system which provided parents with their child’s behavior, grading etc. The school’s API index was really impressive; it was higher than the competing schools around, improving over time since the inception of the school.
I decided to enroll my daughter at Magnolia Science Academy for the upcoming school year and filled the online application.
Back home, searching for Magnolia Science Academy, I happened to read a few blogs titled Gulen charter schools, authored by “Investigative bloggers” or “very concerned (?) citizens.” Your blog offers clear and concise responses to their claims.
As a prospective parent, I’m very excited about her new school and don’t want such bogus sites to affect other uninformed parents.
