I know, some people are telling a lot of Gulen charter schools lies about Magnolia Schools. I recommend one thing to all those. Check out the Washington Post’s High School Challenge Index that ranks America’s Most Challenging High Schools. Let me give you a hint about a school showing up among the top 50, Magnolia (48). Now you tell me this and that, I give you a link from a completely objective source.

My kid is one of the witnesses of the quality education provided in Magnolia, but I don’t want you to believe me. Check out that link and try to tell me that our teachers are doing badly. Let me give you another hint, this time about your answer. You should say “No way they are doing badly, we were the ones doing wrong” if you have conscience of course. So, start doing something good for them by stopping those lies first, at least.

Recently, when surfing on the Web, I came across with some Gulen charter schools comments. I also found Parents4Magnolia website, and I thank Magnolia Science Academy parents, who’re supporting their schools by sharing their experiences. I want to share my own thoughts about our school:
All the staff at MSA are kind, caring and loving. They know all the students by name and beyond and they listen to what anyone has to say. They are open-minded and fair and exhibit a true love for the children, the school and their job. They have never made me feel bad as a parent if I am unsure as to what to do regarding a situation, they offer kind, constructive help and they believe in what they do.
I really enjoy the unique programs that are offered at MSA. What my child learns in Getting Ready For Life class is such a wonderful idea, I wish I had that when I was in school. Also the fact that most/all of his graded tests that he brings home are fill in the answer and not multiple choice which I think is great and really teaches the children to study and solve the problems rather than answer is a, b,c…. The elective classes have been lots of fun for my child and they learn so much in such a short time. He states that he likes all his classes and all of his teachers are wonderful.
I know many kids don’t like to go to school at all after 4th or 5th grade. Somehow our education system starts breaking at about those grades. Magnolia magically keeps students motivated to learn and enjoy at school.
Thank you, MSA!

A parent devoted to his children’s education, I cannot say enough how dissatisfied I was with the traditional public schools.
MSA administrators, teachers, and leaders are ready to be flexible. They can quickly adapt instruction, resources, and many other things to address students’ learning styles. They are attentive to parent requests. They are willing to listen to parents’ concerns. Helloooo! I get phone calls from the teachers about my child’s homework. Phone calls from the teachers in his previous school? only when there is an emergency. In Magnolia Science Academy, not doing your homework is almost treated like an emergency.
The other day, my son’s teacher called me and asked when they can visit our home. How about that? The teacher taking the time to visit us at home to talk about my child. What else can Magnolia do to offer the best education to children? What else would you expect?
MSA offers a future for my child, working together hand in hand with parents, teachers, and administrators unlike any other school system that I know. Spend your time on something good instead of wasting it with ungrounded Gulen charter schools allegations that the parents disagree.

I was doing a web search for my daughter’s school and found out outrageous accusations about Magnolia. These teachers have devoted their lives to our kids’ education and well-being, but, still, few people are making false allegations such as school being staffed by foreign nationals, claiming a connection to so called Gulen charter schools. There is only one person in her school born overseas, how does that take over the whole public school or relate it to someone? Ridiculous! I don’t think, those who spread Gulen charter schools argument have ever visited MSA or any of its sister schools, talked to parents of their students, or witnessed the efforts of Magnolia teachers at all.
If we don’t stand up for our teachers, who would? If we don’t protect them from the lies that are going all around, who would?
I believe in praising hard-working people and their contributions to our society. If somebody is at least trying to do some good for this great nation of ours, then she or he is the one who deserves utmost respect.
I respect and love you, Magnolia teachers. Tomorrow is going to be better with your commitment to our prosperity.

My son enrolled Magnolia Science Academy last year. We moved in from another state and we were a little worried whether our son could adapt to his new environment and his new school. Before coming to Southern California, we did our research on schools just like any other concerned parent would do. We decided where we will move. We looked for a great school on California Department of Education websites to learn more about schools’ academic successes and wanted to learn about the school’s social and cultural options. We found out that MSA was one of the most successful schools within our neighborhood. It was offering free HIGH quality after-school programs and clubs.
We also found out some websites claiming MSA to be part of a network. We came from a state and a town where there wasn’t much diversity. So, I understand clearly how some of these folks could be paranoid, suspicious and mongering hatred towards any foreign national. I tried to understand what these folks claim and wanted to further investigate while I try to find out the best school for my son. We visited MSA and met with the school principal and the assistant principal. We were glad that there was an opening in my son’s grade. We learned the school’s philosophy, approach to learning, and its programs. I also asked about couple of Gulen charter schools allegations I learned from the website. The principal wasn’t surprised that much. He explained that their staff is diverse and they serve a very diverse student body.
My son’s educational experience at MSA has been phenomenal so far. He adapted to his school, teachers, and friends. The classes are small so all of his teachers know him pretty well. We get periodic updates about his grades and behaviors from school’s information system. Whenever I find time, I visit the school and volunteer. I may say that, I observed my son’s school pretty well this year. I am glad that we did the right decision by selecting MSA for our son. I believe MSA will grow academically as they often did in the past.

Parents open letter
All I can do is to thank Magnolia about its safe learning environment. I always see smiley faces focused on pupils’ learning to become successful members of the society. Thank you Magnolia!
As far as the allegations for being connected to illusive Gulen charter schools, these are out of for opposing a successful school choice option to the benefit of the community. We appreciate the hard work that this charter school puts in to develop such a warm and family like environment, while there is news in media about nasty things going on in various schools.
There are so many reasons that Magnolia is the best school considering other schools in our neighborhood; but I would like to focus on the safe learning environment at Magnolia. My son was constantly bullied at his previous school. He was having hard time focusing on his learning. He did not feel safe and he frequently came back home angry and exhausted. I cannot remember a day in which he enjoyed going to the school. I was worried that he will hurt himself or other kids to avoid bullying.
Since enrolling to Magnolia, I can see that his mood has completely changed. He is now more focused on his learning. He talks about his friends and the time that they spent together; he joyfully shares how they enjoy their time at the school. He no longer drags his feet to school; he no longer comes angrily back home. I truly enjoy how he changed.
If those who are trying to defame Magnolia are indeed so much into education, they could try to start a better school. I’m sure there are many parents out there searching for a good public school, and I believe competition will improve quality.

I was thinking that Magnolia was a private school. Its name always sounded like so. That’s why it was not a serious consideration for me at all. But when my friend and I were talking about charter schools and other school choice options, he told me that it was a public charter school and that there was actually no fee for it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have included it in my long list of middle schools that I was planning for my daughter.
Last summer, we went through all possible candidate schools and selected Magnolia. Why did we choose Magnolia? It offers small classroom size. We also talked to couple of teachers, listened to their success stories and saw how they are touching lives of many.
Last month, when I was surfing around the web, I read an article somewhere which was trying to link Magnolia Science Academy with some kind of Gulen charter schools. I was puzzled with the logic and didn’t like the negative sentiment involved. Well.. at the end of the day, I’m a parent dropping of my kid at school each morning and picking up her everyday. An anonymous individual who seemingly has never visited our school is simply throwing arbitrary stuff out his/her desk. It’s odd.
After her first school year with Magnolia, my daughter is happy with the school. She’s happy with her teachers and I’m happy with her grades; she’s made many new friends. We invited her friends along with her favorite teacher for her birthday.

Neighborhood charter school
Recently, we received an invitation for a Magnolia Open House. I wanted to learn more about the charter school in our neighborhood and decided to attend.
The principal presented the charter school. I especially liked the parent collaboration program called ‘Home visits‘; that sounded original. The school had an automated information system which provided parents with their child’s behavior, grading etc. The school’s API index was really impressive; it was higher than the competing schools around, improving over time since the inception of the school.
I decided to enroll my daughter at Magnolia Science Academy for the upcoming school year and filled the online application.
Back home, searching for Magnolia Science Academy, I happened to read a few blogs titled Gulen charter schools, authored by “Investigative bloggers” or “very concerned (?) citizens.” Your blog offers clear and concise responses to their claims.
As a prospective parent, I’m very excited about her new school and don’t want such bogus sites to affect other uninformed parents.

Ignoring success.. (image: Wikimedia)
Why would somebody try to defame a successful charter school, I thought today. What might be the motives behind such a slander?
The first thing came to mind is lack of information. It is highly likely that the people who are spreading these unrelated information on charter schools are the people who don’t have the right information. For sure, it would be much better if they care to visit schools they “dislike,” to firsthand witness the friendly environment and talk to staff and parents..
Another reason, I think, is simply ignoring the nurturing environment in the school. You see the kids, school staff and parents, yet you act like whatever you want and post Gulen charter schools stuff here and there; knowing that it contradicts with the reality per se..
The last thing that I can think of is, the determination to see the odd and bad side of things; no matter whether it’s right or good.. Yes, jealousy!
The people trying hard to label Magnolia with the newly-invented Gulen charter schools tag are those who don’t like charter schools and who don’t want the success of Magnolia schools in particular. The schools’ success means the success of our children; which sadly means those people hiding behind nicknames or false identities don’t really care about our children as well..
Why does anybody would go that far?…
With the help of true information, one would expect that people without prejudices will objectively interpret the situation. Also, the people who ignore will ultimately understand, when there is consistent, stable and repeating success. However, it is really challenging to deal with predetermined agendas.
I’d ask for those people to who are voicing baseless Gulen charter schools articles to open your own public charter schools for us in our neighborhood, if this would help with your jealousy. We welcome school choice, and would love to see more thriving options for the sake of our kids’ education…

Parent Testimonial:
Magnolia offers a great academic program. My daughter has a chance to excel in both math and English. She also has computer classes and she likes computer programming. Her typical day in public schools used to end at 2 pm, while now Magnolia has an extended academic day with high expectations.
Magnolia Science Academy was the choice of my daughter.. At first, I was objecting her because I was in doubt of this little school with 10 or less classrooms and a few staff. We are happy to see that at last I made the right decision to enroll her.
In these difficult economic times, Magnolia is making great sacrifices to offer clubs, free tutoring, social activities, on and on. The student-teacher ratio is so low that I cannot believe it. Previous year, she attended a reputable public school in an affluent community. The number of students in her class was 38. This year, she’s in the class with 27 kids.
Recently, I found out there are a few people who speak ill of Magnolia schools. I feel like they’re rather reacting to the schools’ success. They try to defame these schools by labeling them with some sort of illusive “Gulen charter schools“, whatever it means. I tried to make a little research on it. But when I faced too many self contradicting, baseless articles, I gave up.. I was very disappointed for my wasted time on those unreasonable information.
My personal opinion is that, it’s better to go to school and take a closer look on Magnolia. As a parent, I see care, respect, commitment, and high standards at school staff. Beyond that, I do not really care. All I care is that my daughter is happy at Magnolia Science Academy; her eagerness for knowledge has notably improved and improving everyday.
